Human Guide Volunteer

Human Guide Volunteers provide one-on-one assistance to blind and visually impaired (BVI) participants during Travel Visions Aloha for the Blind events. Volunteers receive training on proper guiding techniques, including sighted guide methods, verbal descriptions, and navigation assistance in various environments. This role is ideal for those who are patient, attentive, and passionate about making outdoor and community experiences accessible to all.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist BVI participants in safely navigating event spaces
  • Provide clear verbal descriptions of surroundings and activities
  • Offer support while maintaining participant independence and dignity
  • Follow the TVA human guide training to ensure a safe and enriching experience
  • Commit to scheduled events and communicate availability in advance

Walk or Run Guide Volunteer

Walk or Run Guide Volunteers partner with BVI participants to provide guidance, safety, and encouragement during walks, jogs, or runs. Guides may walk or run alongside their partners with a tether, use verbal cues for navigation, and adjust to the participant’s preferred pace and needs. Volunteers must be comfortable walking or running at various paces and willing to train in TVA’s guiding techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide BVI participants using tethers, verbal direction, and adaptive techniques
  • Ensure a safe and enjoyable walking or running experience
  • Adjust to the pace and ability of the BVI participant
  • Communicate clearly and provide updates on terrain changes
  • Commit to scheduled walks, training runs, and events

Volunteer Community Coordinator (Phone-Based) (In Development)

This role is currently being developed as TVA finalizes procedures and a dedicated phone system. The Volunteer Community Coordinator will assist with occasional incoming and outgoing calls, helping blind and visually impaired (BVI) community members navigate event registration and receive the support they need to participate. This is a light, flexible role ideal for someone comfortable speaking on the phone and entering basic information into TVA’s system. More details will be provided once this role is ready to launch.

Join Our Events Planning Committee (Small Team, Big Impact!)

We are forming a small, dedicated team to help plan accessible and engaging events for the BVI community on Oʻahu. To start, we’re looking for 3-5 committed members, with the possibility of growing to 7 as needed.

Committee members will assist with venue selection, event logistics, volunteer coordination, outreach, and accessibility planning based on their skills and interests. Volunteers should be able to commit to at least one event every 1-2 months and attend 1-2 planning meetings per month, which may be virtual or in person.

Spots are limited to ensure a focused and effective team. If you’re passionate about fostering inclusive experiences and want to help shape events for the BVI community, apply soon!
