The Keys To Getting It Done!

KeCh Blog #9: Keys To Getting It Done!

Have you ever had a problem getting things done? For me, the answer is sometimes. And when I don’t get it done, I don’t get to do what I want. Has this ever happened to you? I believe that in order to succeed, a person has to advocate for themselves, which includes successfully completing tasks. This can start with having a positive mindset, because I believe things start in your head and your thoughts need to be focused. Having a positive mindset is important because you need to think about what you’re doing so you can stay on track. I’d like to share some ideas on how to stay focused so that you can just get it done!

  1. Make a Decision
Start by making a list of short- and long-term goals. This helps you stay on a specific task or get to the point. Once you have locked down your goal, it’s time to do research and make a choice.
  2. Self-Regulation
This is where you set your schedule or timelines for completing different tasks. It’s important to manage your time and resources and maintain a positive mindset to stay on track.
  3. Don’t Procrastinate!
Now is the time to be productive. Remove distractions, like doing nothing (which I can relate to), listening to music, or watching TV. Set a timer as a reminder for how long to work on your task.
  4. Learn to Ask For Help
When you start to feel stressed or face challenging tasks, ask for help.
  5. Reward Yourself
Completing tasks on your to-do list brings the satisfaction of ticking them off and the opportunity to reward yourself with enjoyable activities.

As a member of the Blind Visual Impairment (BVI) community, there may be obstacles in your way that prevent you from achieving your goals. Things like transportation, workplace technology, accommodations, and people’s low expectations of blind and visually impaired individuals can often make it hard to complete tasks. Sometimes, it’s good to get help, even when it’s hard to communicate what you need to get things done. Relying on others can also be challenging, but my rule #4 says to ask for help—and that means learning to trust those around you.

Another idea to try is changing your environment. Changing your surroundings can help shift your mindset because, oftentimes, getting started is the hardest part. You got this!
