Technology like electronic braille notes, computers, phones and apps can help those who are visually impaired improve their lives.

The Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) community uses technology because they want to learn as much as they can to be independent. Independence is important because it builds your confidence level higher which allows you to try new things. I believe that technology is important to the BVI community because understanding it will assist us with the improvement of our lives. Technology is everywhere around us and we shouldn’t be afraid to interact with that aspect of the world.

Understanding technology is significant for several reasons such as; Accessibility, Education, Employment Opportunities, Social Inclusion, Independence and Empowerment. Technology offers accessible features like screen readers, magnification tools, voice-activated commands, which enables visually impaired individuals to independently access information, communicate, and navigate digital platforms. Having accessibility is significant for us because that helps us to understand everything better. The integration of technology promotes social inclusion by helping individuals gain confidence when in the community. By understanding technology, visually impaired individuals can engage in digital communication, social media, and online communities. These actions allow for the enhancing of social connections and minimizes isolation. I am happy that I am able to text my best friend and sometimes we use Facetime to stay connected. Nobody wants to be alone!

By mastering technology, visually impaired people can access online resources, engage in online learning, and explore diverse career options. The most important part of technology is the ability to gain access so that we can be independent. I have been given the opportunity to participate in a program that provides services that include job coaching, mobility training, written information in braille and different apps for my phone.

Here are 3 apps that I think might be interesting:

  1. Portions Master: This app's primary function is to identify the contents of a user's plate, providing not just the names of the dishes but also detailed nutritional information.
  2. Smart Glasses: They have the ability to offer navigational support, object and facial recognition and aid in communication (send & receive calls)
  3. Seeing AI: Seeing AI uses the device camera to identify people and objects, and then the app audibly describes those objects

As always, Ms. Marri and Travel Visions Aloha want people to know that we are capable of living full and happy lives, so keep reading my blog to find out about more adventures!—Kelly & Mrs. Evon

A vibrant, stylized portrait of a man centrally positioned, wearing futuristic-looking glasses that resemble goggles. They are dark, almost indigo-blue, with a reflective quality. He wears a futuristic, tech-inspired jacket with orange-red and teal-turquoise tones. The background is filled with circular forms and diagonal lines and shapes that resemble circuit boards or digital patterns in teal, turquoise, and other blues and oranges.
